Tajik Opposition Party Leader Missing

20 April 2005 -- A Tajik opposition leader has been reported missing after being released by Moscow police who had held him at Tajikistan's request.
The Democratic Party of Tajikistan released a statement today saying that its leader Mahmadruzi Iskandarov has been missing since 15 April.

The statement urges Russian authorities and international organizations to help search for him.

Tajik authorities have sought Iskandarov's extradition to charge him with terrorism and embezzlement. The same authorities criticized Russia for releasing him earlier this month.

Iskandarov recently told RFE/RL that he would run for president in upcoming Tajik elections.
