Iranian Journalist: Release All Jailed Dissidents

Akbak Ganji on 30 May Tehran, 30 May 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Iranian investigative journalist Akbar Ganji, who was temporarily released from jail last night for medical treatment, has called for the immediate released of all jailed dissidents.
Addressing reporters at his home in Tehran, hours after his release, Ganji said all political prisoners should be freed without delay.

Iran's hardline judiciary has given Ganji a short leave from prison on health grounds. Lawyer Mohammad Salarkia told Iran's official IRNA news agency that his client's leave would last seven days and could be extended if further treatment is needed to cure his pneumonia.

The 48-year-old Ganji's health has suffered from a recent hunger strike. He was sentenced in 2001 to six years in prison after being charged in relation to articles he wrote linking senior officials to the murders of several intellectuals and writers.
