Iraq Says Hundreds Of Suspected Insurgents Detained

Iraqi police (file photo) Baghdad, 3 June 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Iraqi Interior Minister Bayan Sulagh Jabr says the government is making big gains in its offensive against insurgents in Baghdad.
Al-Jabr said security forces have captured 700 suspected insurgents, killed 28 militants, and seized large quantities of weapons since Operation Lightning was launched on 29 May.

More than 30 people were reported killed yesterday in a series of suicide bombings and other attacks in northern Iraq and elsewhere. The most deadly single attack occurred in the northern town of Tuz Khormato, where 12 people died in a blast that targeted bodyguards of Deputy Prime Minister Rowsch Nouri Shaways, a Kurd.
