20 June 2005 (RFE/RL) -- The main reformist candidate defeated in the first round of Iran's presidential election, Mustafa Moin, is demanding that the runoff be postponed, pending a probe into alleged voting irregularities.
In a statement, Moin said the first round was "contrary to a free and fair election." He cited numerous reports of allegedly rigged votes and counting. He urged the postponement of the second round on 24 June until all complaints have been heard.
The statement was addressed to the election supervisory arm of the Guardians Council, Iran's hard-line political watchdog.
At least three of the seven candidates who stood in the 17 June first round have complained of irregularities.
The Guardians Council, meanwhile, has agreed to recount a small selection of ballot boxes. It says the recount will be completed by today so the second round can go ahead as scheduled.
