Uzbek President Visits Moscow

Uzbek President Islam Karimov (file photo) 28 June 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Uzbek President Islam Karimov is due to visit Moscow today for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
It will be Karimov's second foreign trip since the 13 May violence in eastern Uzbekistan that left as many as hundreds of people killed or wounded.

Karimov visited China shortly after the bloodshed.

The Chinese and Russian governments have both expressed support for the actions of Uzbek forces in cracking down on the demonstrators in Andijon. This is in contrast to criticism from Western countries, who have demanded an international probe of the violence.

The Uzbek government says Islamic extremists were responsible for the violence, in which it says 176 people were killed. Rights advocates and witnesses have claimed that as many as 1,000 of people died.
