Kazakh, Chinese Presidents Meet

Russian President Vladimir Putin met with President Hu in Moscow on 1 July 4 July 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbaev met with Chinese President Hu Jintao today in Astana, and said he agreed with Hu's call for a multipolar world.
Hu arrived in the Kazakh capital from Moscow, where he and Russian President Vladimir Putin said it is for the benefit of all that no one country is dominant in the world.

ITAR-TASS quotes Nazarbaev as saying Hu had put forth "courageous ideas" about the need for a multipolar world. He also stressed that cooperation with China is a priority in Kazakhstan's foreign policy.

Today's talks come one day ahead of a summit in Astana of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, a grouping that aims to boost security cooperation among its member states.

The summit will bring together the leaders of member states China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, as well as representatives of Iran, India, and Pakistan, who have requested observer status.
