6 July 2005 -- Iraq's Al-Qaeda today threatened to kill Egypt's top envoy to Iraq, Ihab al-Sharif, who was kidnapped recently.
An Internet statement purportedly from the group said the group has decided to hand over "the apostate, the ambassador of Egypt which is allied to Jews and Christians, to the mujahedin to carry out the punishment of the apostate...and to kill him."
The statement could not be immediately authenticated.
The group earlier posted pictures on the Internet of identification cards of al-Sharif as proof it had kidnapped him.
The pictures included al-Sharif's driving license, Foreign Ministry, and health insurance cards. The cards bore the name, title and passport-sized pictures of the envoy.
