9 July 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Iran's state television said today at least 32 people have drowned while trying to cool off on the weekend along northern Iran's Caspian Sea coastline.
The report said the victims appeared to be over-enthusiastic weekend holidaymakers who flocked to the 740-kilometer coastline yesterday -- the start of a long weekend -- and charged into the water regardless of their swimming abilities.
Television said 32 bodies have been recovered of people who went too far into the sea.
The Caspian Sea, the world's largest inland body of water, is a popular travel destination for millions of Iranians. However the waters along the beaches are known to have sharp drops in depth, often catching waders off guard.
