13 July 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Five Iranian parliamentarians announced today they would soon visit the prison where jailed journalist Akbar Ganji has been on a hunger strike for more than 30 days
Lawmaker Saeed Abutaleb told the state news agency IRNA that Ganji has lost 17 kilograms during his hunger strike, raising concerns about his detention.
Abutaleb said if anything happens to Ganji, "we will all be sorry."
Abutaleb did not say exactly when the group of MPs would go to the Evin prison where Ganji is being held.
U.S. President George Bush yesterday called on Iranian authorities to release Ganji and said America stands with the jailed journalist.
Ganji was sentenced to six years in jail in 2001 for writing articles linking Iranian government officials to the 1998 murders of political dissidents.
