19 July 2005 -- The European Union's top foreign policy official, Javier Solana, is due in Kyiv today to discuss Ukraine's efforts to forge closer ties with the 25-country bloc.
President Viktor Yushchenko has made EU membership for his country a top priority.
Among other issues Solana is expected to discuss with Yushchenko, Prime Minister Yuliya Tymoshenko, and other top officials are Ukraine's efforts to improve border-control cooperation with its neighbors.
Solana is also expected to discuss proposals for resolving Moldova's dispute with Transdniester, a mostly Russian-speaking region that broke away from Moldova in 1992 after a brief war.
Yushchenko has proposed a peace plan that envisages keeping Transdniester within Moldova but giving it broad autonomy.
