25 July 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Sunni Arab members of a committee that is writing Iraq's new constitution have ended a week-long boycott of the group.
The secretary of the committee, Humam Hammudi, says the 12 Sunnis joined a closed-door meeting today. Their participation is considered essential to win Sunni approval for the charter in an October referendum.
The boycott was a protest against the assassination on 19 July of two Sunnis involved in drafting the charter. There is a 15 August deadline for parliament to approve a constitution ahead of the referendum.
Meanwhile, violence continued in Baghdad this morning with two more suicide car bombings that killed at least seven people and injured 14.
Those attacks come a day after a suicide bomber drove a truck into a police station in eastern Baghdad, killing at least 22 people.
