Russian Comedian-Turned-Governor Dies In Car Crash

7 August 2005 -- Milhail Yevdokimov, a comedian who was elected governor of the Siberian region of Altai last year, was killed today in a traffic accident.
The Russian Emergency Situations Ministry announced that the he car he was riding in crashed into a tree when its driver tried to avoid another car.

The driver and a bodyguard also died and Yevdokimov's wife was seriously injured.

The accident took place near the town of Biisk, some 3,000 kilometers southeast of the capital Moscow.

Yevdokimov worked in an automobile engine plant in Altai where he amused co-workers with his parodies of famous figures. He eventually took his skills to Moscow, where he became famous for his skits and satirical monologues and won roles in several movies.
