Floods Strike Northern Iran

10 August 2005 (RFE/RL) -- A Iranian official says overnight floods caused by heavy rains have killed about 18 people and left 12 missing in the northeastern Iranian province of Golestan.
Red Crescent emergency workers in the area also said the floods had caused extensive damage and said it had dispatched helicopters to look for survivors.

State radio says roads, farms, and buildings had been damaged by the torrents of floodwater rushing through the heavily forested Caspian Sea province.

The Interior Ministry said it has no further details.
