Kyiv Says It Will Resolve Border Dispute With Romania

Borys Tarasyuk (file photo) 18 August 2005 -- Ukrainian Foreign Minister Borys Tarasyuk said that Ukraine and Romania will solve their Black Sea border dispute through talks rather than having the case considered by the International Court of Justice.
Tarasyuk told reporters the two neighbors "have a political will to solve the dispute and will avoid court." The two countries have been wrangling for years over the boundary line in the oil-rich Black Sea.

Last September, Romania filed a lawsuit with the United Nations' chief court, saying bilateral talks were leading nowhere. It detailed its position last week in a separate report filed to the Netherlands-based UN court.

Ukraine was expected to file its own report in coming months, after which the court is to start hearings in the case.
