Three Policemen Killed In Daghestan Blast

20 August 2005 -- An explosion in the capital of Russia's southern republic of Daghestan today killed three policemen and wounded a fourth.
City police in Makhachkala said two police officers died on the spot. A third died later of his wounds.

Another policeman was severely injured. The police were reportedly passing by on foot patrol when the blast struck.

The explosion is said to have been caused by a remote-controlled explosive placed near a building, and not in a police car as initially reported.

Near daily attacks on police and authorities have raised fears that violence is spreading from neighboring Chechnya. Some of the violence is believed linked to criminal gangs.
