21 August 2005 -- Strong winds downed major power lines in western Georgia early today, leaving an estimated 2 million people without power in the capital Tbilisi and eastern regions.
Fuel and Energy Minister Nika Gilauri said workers were trying to repair the power lines leading from a hydroelectric generating station.
Some electricity had already been restored to Tbilisi within hours of the incident.
Georgia has been plagued by frequent outages for years. Most businesses and many residences have petrol-powered generators for use when the electricity goes out.
