23 August 2005 (RFE/RL) -- The European Union today sent a fact-finding mission to the Moldova-Ukraine border to prepare for further EU assistance in monitoring and controlling the boundary between the two countries.
A statement issued by Javier Solana, the EU foreign and security policy chief, says the EU assistance will focus on the Transdniester sector of the border.
The EU mission will tour the Moldova-Ukraine frontier region until 29 August.
EU has made clear it considers better controls on the border between Ukraine and Moldova's breakaway Transdniester region an essential element in bringing an end to the conflict between Chisinau and Tiraspol.
Solana's statement says the EU mission was launched in response to a request from the presidents of both Moldova and Ukraine.
