24 August 2005 (RFE/RL) -- An American who served as an interrogator for U.S. military intelligence has been sentenced to two months in prison for abusing an Afghan detainee who later died.
Specialist Glendale Walls was sentenced after he earlier on 23 August pleaded guilty to dereliction of duty and assault.
At the sentencing hearing in El Paso, Texas, Walls apologized for assaulting the Afghan detainee, who is known as Dilawar, and for not taking action to stop other U.S. soldiers from abusing detainees.
Dilawar, who was held in U.S. detention at the Bagram air base in Afghanistan, died in December 2002, the same month he was detained.
The Associated Press reports that Dilawar's death has led to charges against a number of other U.S. military service members.
