26 August 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Uzbekistan's Senate today voted to evict U.S. military forces from Uzbekistan.
The approval backs President Islam Karimov's order to kick the United States out of the country. Karimov gave Washington its eviction notice in July, giving the U.S. troops six months to vacate the Karshi-Khanabad base in southern Uzbekistan.
The base, known as K2, has played a role in U.S.-led operations in neighboring Afghanistan.
Karimov's order to evict U.S. forces from Uzbekistan came after Washington joined international demands for an independent probe into an uprising and military crackdown in the eastern Uzbek city of Andijon in May.
Several Uzbek senators said today the decision to evict U.S. military forces was not linked to criticism from Washington over the Andijon events. Some senators demanded U.S. compensation for alleged environmental damage.
