7 September 2005 (RFE/RL) -- A vehicle exploded today in Afghanistan's southern Helmand Province, killing three people inside and a passerby.
Helmand Province governor spokesman Mohammad Wali said the men appeared to have been preparing a suicide attack but that the explosives in their vehicle went off early.
He said the explosion occurred off a road often patrolled by Afghan and U.S.-led coalition forces.
There was no military convoy in the area at the time of the explosion. It was not clear why three men would have been needed for a suicide attack.
Attacks by Taliban-led insurgents have intensified ahead of Afghanistan's 18 September parliamentary elections.
