Ukraine Charges Customs Chief With Corruption

8 September 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Ukraine's national security service today said it has opened a criminal case against customs chief Volodymyr Skomarovskyy.
The security service said he and other customs officials are suspected of involvement in smuggling. No other details were made available.

Parliament recently adopted a law approving disciplinary measures for the state customs service, making the customs chief responsible for discipline among his subordinates.

It is not immediately clear if the case against Skomarovskyyis connected to Ukraine's deepening political crisis. Three government officials have resigned since 3 September over concerns about government corruption.
