9 September 2005 -- Kazakhstan's ruling Otan party named President Nursultan Nazarbaev today to be its candidate in the presidential election set for December.
Nazarbaev has been the country's leader for 16 years. He has promised to increase the per-capita gross domestic product (GDP) by 2 1/2 times by 2012.
The opposition accuses Nazarbaev of corruption and failing to follow up economic reforms with democratic changes.
Addressing the Otan party's congress today, Nazarbaev said that in the past seven years GDP in the country of 15 million grew by 75 percent, budget revenues grew by five times and incomes tripled.
He warned about "instability in the neighborhood," in an apparent reference to uprisings earlier this year in Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, and said his reelection is important for the sake of preserving peace in Kazakhstan.
