15 September 2005 (RFE/RL) -- The bodies of seven civilians, all men, were found on a main road in Afghanistan's central Oruzgan Province.
Oruzgan Governor Jan Mohammad Khan blamed the Taliban for the killing, saying they killed men for carrying voter-registration cards.
The cards entitling the men to vote in Sunday's (18 September) election were found along with the bodies yesterday.
Afghan forces today said they arrested five suspected militants, three of them Pakistanis, at a checkpoint in the eastern Nangahar Province. According to a Defense Ministry spokesman, the men were posing as journalists and were carrying explosives hidden inside cameras along with a remote-control device.
Afghans go the polls on 18 September in the first parliamentary and provincial elections in over 30 years.
