Violent attacks have increased in the run-up to this month's voting
15 September 2005 -- The provincial governor says six people were killed in attacks by suspected Taliban rebels in Afghanistan's southern Oruzgan Province.
Governor Jan Mohammad Khan said that Afghan soldiers manning a checkpoint came under attack by a group of suspected Taliban yesterday. Three Taliban were killed in the fighting and one injured. There were no casualties among the soldiers.
Also yesterday, two women and a man were killed when their vehicle hit a mine on a road in the same province. Jan Mohammad said the roadside bomb was probably aimed at U.S. and Afghan forces.
Militant attacks have increased ahead of elections on 18 September for the national assembly and provincial councils, the first in more than 30 years.
In the past six months, fighting has left more than 1,200 people dead.
