16 September 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Three Iraqis were killed and a dozen others injured today when armed men in cars opened fire on a crowd of day-laborers in Baghdad.
The attack occurred in a southeastern Baghdad district, in a square where Iraqis gather each morning looking for day jobs.
It came after two days of bloodshed in the Iraqi capital.
On 15 September, suicide bombers killed at least 31 people in two attacks that targeted Iraqi police.
On 14 September, a series of bombings in the city killed more than 150 people and wounded hundreds. Many of the victims were Iraqis seeking day jobs.
Late on Thursday, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan told the UN Security Council there is a "steadily deteriorating trend" in Iraq, as well as an "absence of protection of the right to life."
