21 September 2005 -- A visit to Kosovo today by Serbia's new government representative for the disputed province sparked a protest by about 100 ethnic Albanians.
After Sanda Raskovic-Ivic met with UN officials in Prishtina the venue of the meeting had to be changed due to the protests. During her visit, Raskovic-Ivic said she is sure Kosovo will remain part of Serbia and Montenegro.
The province has been administered by the UN since mid-1999 when a NATO air war halted a Serbian crackdown on ethnic Albanians seeking independence.
An estimated 10,000 ethnic Albanians were killed during the conflict. After the war, tens of thousands of Serbs fled. Yesterday, the United States, the European Union, and Russia urged Kosovar leaders to step up efforts to establish a stable multiethnic democracy.
