29 September 2005 -- A mass grave has been discovered in southeastern Afghanistan that is believed to contain the bodies of more than 500 soldiers of the communist regime toppled in 1992.
Interior Ministry spokesman Yousuf Stanikzai said today that a team has been sent by the ministry to investigate the site. He said there are reports of more than 500 bodies at the site, in Paktika Province.
If it is confirmed, it would be the first mass grave found in Afghanistan containing communist soldiers.
Ahmad Nader Nadery of the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission said his group has sent a team to investigate the site.
That's after reports from locals that two mujahedin commanders linked to the massacre were candidates in the 18 September legislative elections.
