Annan To Recommend Start Of Kosovo Talks

Kofi Annan (file photo) 7 October 2005 -- United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan says he wants to start talks on the future status of the Serbian province of Kosovo "soon."
Speaking to journalists today in the Swiss capital, Bern, Annan said he will notify the Security Council about his recommendation later today.

Earlier, UN Kosovo administrator Soren Jessen-Petersen said he was "very confident" that Annan will recommend that negotiations start by the end of the year.

Kosovo, which has an ethnic Albanian majority, has been administered by the UN since 1999, when a NATO air campaign drove Serbian forces out of the region.
