Islam Expert's Disappearance Investigated In Kabardino-Balkariya

9 November 2005 -- Prosecutors in the North Caucasus republic of Kabardino-Balkariya have opened a criminal case into the disappearance of Islam expert Ruslan Nakhushev, who disappeared this week.
Nakhushev, director of the Center for Islamic Studies in Nalchik, has not been seen since 4 November. Colleagues say he disappeared shortly after being questioned by the Federal Security Service (FSB) in connection with last month's militant raid on the city.

City Prosecutor Ilyas Irugov said investigators opened the case into Nakhushev's disappearance after he failed to appear yesterday for a fresh round of questioning regarding the 13-14 October attacks. Young Muslim extremists have been blamed for the violence.

Local Interior Ministry and FSB authorities will lead the investigation.
