UN Orders Afghanistan Staff To Stay Home

(RFE/RL) 15 November 2005 -- The United Nations has told its staff in Kabul to stay home or in their offices today, a day after two suicide bombings killed a German peacekeeper and three Afghans.

UN spokesman Adrian Edwards said the restrictions imposed on both local and foreign UN personnel were part of normal security procedures.

The German soldier, part of the NATO-led peacekeeping force, and the three Afghans died in attacks carried out by Taliban guerrillas on the same stretch of road where NATO contingents and two UN offices are located.

In each incident, attackers rammed a car carrying explosives into a vehicle belonging to the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force. Two Greek soldiers and two other German soldiers were wounded in the attacks.
