Bomb Attacks Greet New Year In Iraq

Six bombs were placed in cars, and one was strapped to a suicide bomber (RFE/RL) 1 January 2006 -- Officials say insurgents greeted the New Year in Baghdad with at least eight bomb attacks.

There were, however, relatively few casualties. At least 11 people were reported wounded.

An Iraqi Defense Ministry official said six of the blasts were the result of bombs placed in parked cars, while a seventh involved a suicide bomber.

AP reports another five bomb attacks across the country outside the capital city. At least nine people were injured in those blasts.

Two of the bombs exploded in Kirkuk. One targeted an American convoy, the other an Iraqi police convoy.
