7 January 2006 -- Iran and Russia have held talks in Tehran on a Russian proposal to enrich Iranian uranium in Russia, vowing afterward to continue their meetings on 8 January.
Hossein Entezami, spokesman for Iran's Supreme National Security Council, called the talks "satisfactory" and said they will continue.
Russia has proposed that Tehran carry out uranium enrichment on its territory and then transfer the fuel to Iran to allay Western fears that the technology could allow Iran to produce nuclear weapons. The European Union and the United States have backed Russia's proposal in principle.
Meanwhile, Iran also said on 7 January that it will resume its nuclear-fuel research program, which was suspended for more than two years due to Western concerns.
EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana also urged Iran not to resume a uranium-enrichment program, saying it could doom any further negotiations with the EU about economic aid.
