Cold Wave Kills 181 People In Ukraine

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko takes a dip in the icy-cold waters of the River Dnieper, 19 January (epa) 26 January 2006 -- Ukraine's Health Ministry say that 181 people in the country have died over the past five days in a spell of bitterly cold weather in which temperatures have plunged to minus 25 degrees.

It said some 2,300 people had been hospitalized.


Most of those who died were homeless or had been drunk.


Temperatures are rising in Ukraine and are expected to continue to rise over the weekend.
