Kyrgyz Parliament Speaker Intends To Resign

Omurbek Tekebaev (file photo) (RFE/RL) 8 February 2006 -- The speaker of Kyrgyzstan's parliament says he intends to hand in his resignation.

Omurbek Tekebaev says the official announcement of his resignation could come as soon as the 13 February parliament session in Bishkek.

Tekebaev has described his intention as a personal decision.

The news comes after President Kurmanbek Bakiev on 3 February criticized parliament for incompetence. Tekebaev responded by saying the president's criticisms were unjustified.
