Kazakhstan To Stop Operating Soviet-Era Aircraft In 2010

(RFE/RL) April 14, 2006 -- Kazakhstan's Transport and Communications Ministry says that, starting in 2010, Kazakhstan's Soviet-made airplanes and helicopters will not be allowed to operate.

The ministry says the aircraft pose a threat to safety.

The move comes as Kazakhstan is trying to meet European aviation standards. Last month, the European Union banned some Kazakh airlines from operating in European skies, declaring them unsafe.
