British military spokeswoman Kelly Goodall said the attack on the Abu Naji base, near the city of Al-Amarah, occurred before dawn.

Six British soldiers have been killed in attacks in southern Iraq over the past 10 days.

Elsewhere in Iraq, four teachers on their way to school were killed in a drive-by shooting in the village of Balad Ruz, 80 kilometers northwest of Baghdad.

In the Iraqi capital, a roadside bomb apparently aimed at a police patrol missed its target, killing one civilian.
