July 9, 2006 -- Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov have discussed by phone the United Nations' response to missile tests conducted last week by North Korea.
Both countries opposed a Japanese-sponsored resolution seeking sanctions against North Korea.
The other three permanent members of the Security Council -- the United States, Britain and France -- have condemned the tests and backed the resolution.
North Korea launched seven missiles, all of which failed shortly after being fired. One of the missiles could theoretically be capable of reaching Alaska. The international community fears North Korea is seeking to develop missiles capable of carrying a nuclear bomb.
