Asian Bank To Help Uzbekistan Tackle Land Erosion

Cotton harvesting in Uzbekistan (ITAR-TASS) PRAGUE, July 28, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved two loans worth more than $60 million to help Uzbek farmers cope with land degradation.

The ADB says in a statement that the loans are aimed at improving land irrigation and reclamation practices in nine districts of Bukhara, Qashqadaryo, and Navoi regions.


ADB says crop yields in those areas has decreased by nearly one-third since 1991.
