Polio Cases Surge In Afghanistan

An Afghan child in Jalalabad receives apolio vaccination (epa) August 12, 2006 -- Afghan health officials today said that the number of polio cases reported in the country has quadrupled this year.

They say that the surge has been almost entirely in southern provinces where the insurgency is fiercest.


The violence has, they say, made it difficult to establish health services in the region.
