August 16, 2006 -- Reports from Tashkent say the leader of the country's official youth organization, Kamolot, has been removed from office.
The pro-government press-uz.info information website says Batyr Ubaidulloev will be temporarily replaced by his first deputy, Kakhramon Kuranbaev.
The organization will elect a new chairman at its next congress, which will take place by the end of this year.
Press-uz.info says Ubaidulloev requested to be relieved of his duties. But it hints at other possible reasons for the removal, saying the outgoing leader "recently failed to fully implement the tasks Kamalot had been entrusted with."
News that Ubaidulloev had been removed from office was first reported by the nongovernmental UzMetronom information website on August 15.
UzMetronom also said the youth leader had been stripped of his seat in the Senate, the upper house of the Uzbek parliament.
