Four Suspected Militants Killed In Daghestan

(RFE/RL) August 26, 2006 -- Heavily armed police surrounded a house in the southern Russian republic of Daghestan today and exchanged gunfire with suspected militants holed up inside, killing four and wounding a woman who was with the gunmen.
One police officer was wounded.

Daghestan's top police official, republican Interior Minister Adilgerei
Magomedtagirov, said police and security forces attacked the house
after its occupants rejected a demand to surrender. He said an
unspecified number of children left the building before the assault.

Magomedtagirov said the suspected militants were planning a terrorist attack, but he offered no evidence of this.

Meanwhile, Russian news agencies reported that three servicemen were
killed when gunmen attacked their vehicle in Ingushetia, which borders
Chechnya.
