Bomb Kills Five Afghans

(RFE/RL) October 9, 2006 -- A roadside bomb in the eastern Afghan province of Nangarhar today killed five people, including three senior district officials.

The three were the chief of Khogyani district, his police commander, and his intelligence chief. A policeman and a passerby were also killed.

The officials were traveling to a village to visit a school that the Taliban-led militants torched late on October 8.

A self-declared spokesman for the Taliban, Yusuf Ahmadi, claimed that the Taliban was responsible for the attack.

The latest attack came shortly after the Afghan army and police reported they had killed 54 militants in clashes over the weekend.
