German Defense Minister Franz Josef Jung (center) in Afghanistan in June (epa) PRAGUE, October 25, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- Germany's Defense Ministry says it is investigating five photographs that show some its troops in Afghanistan posing with a human skull.

The three-year-old pictures were published in today's edition of the mass circulation daily "Bild."

"Bild" quotes Defense Minister Franz Josef Jung as saying his administration "cannot tolerate such behavior by German soldiers."

Jung reportedly said the troops would be prosecuted if the pictures proved to be genuine.
