November 19, 2006 -- The Afghan government has called for urgent humanitarian assistance for a number of remote, flood-hit villages in western Afghanistan.
The head of an emergency disaster committee, Habibullah Murghabias, said that impassable roads were preventing trucks carrying aid from reaching the villages, which lie in the mountainous province of Badghis.
Two NATO helicopters have been able to deliver food and medicine.
The death toll stands at 55. More than 100 people are missing.
