Tajik Interpol Officers Arrested On Corruption Charges

(RFE/RL) December 6, 2006 -- Two members of Tajikistan's national bureau of the international police organization Interpol have been arrested on corruption charges, local media report.

The two officers were reportedly detained in the northern Sogdh region on December 5.

They are accused of accepting jewelry and a $1,000 bribe from a suspected rapist.


Tajikistan joined Interpol in 2004.

Combating corruption in police forces is one of Interpol's stated priorities.
