U.S. Says Iran Will Probe American's Disappearance

(RFE/RL) April 4, 2007 -- The U.S. State Department says authorities in Tehran have promised to look into the disappearance of an American man in Iran.
The missing man has been identified as a former FBI agent.

The department says Iran replied to a U.S. request for information or help, and asked for additional details about the missing man's travel itinerary.

The response came through Swiss intermediaries in Iran. The United States and Iran have no diplomatic relations, but do exchange information through neutral Swiss diplomats.

The retired agent was identified as 59 year-old Robert Levinson of Florida. He was last heard from around March 11 while in a coastal area of southern Iran, where he was said to be working for an independent filmmaker.
