Turkey Criticizes Armenia For Barring Election Monitors

Armenians are due to go to the polls on May 12 (file photo) (OSCE) May 9, 2007 -- Turkey has criticized Armenia for refusing entry to Turkish members of a team of international election observers.

The eight Turkish academics were part of an Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) mission to observe Armenia's May 12 parliamentary vote.

Yerevan cited the lack of diplomatic relations as the reason for denying the visas.

The OSCE said Armenia's last parliamentary vote, in 2003, fell short of democratic standards.
