May 9, 2007 -- Conservative former presidential candidate Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf was narrowly reelected mayor of Tehran today.
Qalibaf was chosen by the City Council, which was itself elected in December in a popular vote that was seen as a victory for moderate conservatives.
Qalibaf is a former Islamic Revolution Guards Corps commander who ran for president in 2005.
The mayoral post is often regarded as a springboard for national politics, and was previously held by President Mahmud Ahmadinejad.
