Serbia's Parliament Speaker Resigns

May 13, 2007 -- Serbian Parliament Speaker Tomislav Nikolic, an ultranationalist, resigned today, averting a political row.

Nicolic, of the Serbian Radical Party, stepped down after liberal and moderate parties agreed on May 11 to form a new coalition government.

He was elected only last week, provoking fears that Serbia was returning to its nationalist past.
