July 3, 2007 -- President George W. Bush has commuted the prison sentence of a former top aide to Vice President Dick Cheney.
Lewis "Scooter" Libby had been sentenced to 30 months in jail for lying and obstructing a probe into who revealed the identify of a CIA agent whose husband had criticized the Iraq war. But Bush said the sentence was "excessive."
Libby will still have to pay a $250,000 fine and he will be on probation for two years.
Opposition Democrats condemned Bush's move as "disgraceful."
